Capturing the Latest Trends for women
Dotty for Demi Moore’s Polka Dots
02.12.09 | No Comments

Demi_moore_polka_dot_dress_2

Red carpet events, while fun, are usually too ostentatious and flamboyant for anything other than admiring the dresses from afar. To find pieces for your everyday wardrobe, you usually have to look elsewhere, unless of course the ceremony is a bit more intimate or the stars dress down a bit - like Demi Moore at the Berlin International Film Festival in a strapless black and white polka dot Michael Kors dress.  Because polka dots are bold and already make a statement, be judicious when adding a fun understated pieces. Try a belt or heels in a vibrant red, perhaps, or follow Demi's stylish example and go completely accessory-free.

Get Tempted by a Serpent’s Worth of Snakeskin Accessories
02.11.09 | No Comments

Snakeskin_accessories_prada

For Spring 2009, Miuccia Prada decided to forgo bling.  "It's primitive," she explained about her collection of artfully dishevelled looks and snakeskin prints, "going back to what counts." Snakeskin always counts in our book, be it this fabulous Well Grounded tote or matching shoes from Dulce, an up-and-coming designer located in San Diego.  However, rest assured that no actual serpents were harmed so your fashion lust could be satisfied, given the skins are actually vegetable-dyed leather recycled from the food industry. Available at Piperlime.com.

Two “It” Bags Duke it Out in Court
06.04.08 | No Comments

Louis_vuitton_dooney_burke_2

While both of these logo-ridden bags are ridiculously ugly, they managed not only to commit crimes against good taste...but to waste four years of the court's time in a heated copyright dispute. Louis Vuitton has maintained that the Dooney & Burke "It" bag infringed on LV's Takashi Murakami-designed Monograme Multicolore...however the court wasn't buying.

Louis_vuitton_murikami_2 "[Louis Vuitton] offered no proof that the similarities in the marks is likely to confuse ordinary consumers, whether it is at the point of initial interest, point-of-sale, or post-sale," wrote U.S. District Court Judge Shira Scheindlin in a recent decision. "Even the testimony of Louis Vuitton's director of intellectual property suggests Louis Vuitton's infringement claim is not necessarily premised on a likelihood of confusion between its products and those of [the] defendant, but rather Louis Vuitton's distaste at being associated with the It Bags."

Dooney_burke_it_bag While LV naturally plans to appeal the decision, the judge actually came to the correct conclusion. Why? Common sense will tell you that a woman buying Dooney & Burke is most likely not (nor ever will be) a Louis Vuitton customer, so the Dooney bag would not have cost LV many lost sales. And most importantly, protecting a design from a competitor's version simply because of a close resemblance is anti-competitive.

In actual fact, the Dooney & Burke version probably helped LV by (unfortunately) spreading awareness of the Murakami design. (via WWD)

Singin’ the Fashion Blues: Carly’s Chic Steals and Fashion Deals of the Week
06.03.08 | No Comments

by Carly J. Cais, Fashion Designer & ChicSteals blog

As a designer - my line is RIVETED Clothing & Accessories - I've developed an eye for style over the years, and an appreciation for the fact that sometimes, designer pricetags can be downright scary. While life necessitates a splurge once in a while on that can't-live-without-it fabulous item, much of the fun of fashion is mixing high with low to create outfits that are creative, and also budget-friendly. Each week, I showcase five hot designer-style steals (each for $100 or, in most cases, for much, much less)...along with one must-splurge item.

This week, celebrate the start of summer in something inspired by the blue of the ocean (or the local pool, depending on where you live). From elegant azure to robin's egg, these five breezy pieces will keep both you and your budget floating in an ocean of calm:

FLOWERED FROCK Florals are a huge trend for spring/summer, and this tunic is as chic solo, as over white capris, chocolate brown sandals, simple jewelry, and a killer (faux!) tan. Jarassic Floral Tunic, $88 at ArdenB.com.

SKY BLUE SKINNIES When it comes to luxe denim with high-street styling but low-budget friendliness, Cheap Monday is the way to go.  This mid-rise skinny gets a sexy update in cheery aqua, while the tight, stretch silhouette would look fab with a loose vintage-print tee and sky-high round-toe pumps - perfect for heading straight from the street to a swanky club. Cheap Monday's The Skyscraper in OD, $65 at Karmaloop.com.

SKINNY BELT It's amazing how a thin pop of color at the waist can bring an otherwise drab outfit to life.  This little belt - also small in price ($10!) - will pay big style dividends paired with everything from tunic dresses to trenchcoats to tight little tees. Xhilaration Skinny Patent Belt, $9.99 at Target.com.

PATENT PURSE The must-have of the moment is patently, well, patent. Pair this sweet satchel with other touches of patent (shoes, belt, headband), but balance all that shine with a matte outfit so as not to blind innocent bystanders. The interior pockets keep everything organized and neat...and the $30 price is equally neat. Bisou Bisou Patent Trimmed Printed Satchel, $29.99 (sale) at JCPenney.com.

OVERSIZE GLASS RING For a chunky, funky statement piece, try this eyecatching bauble by Orfeo Quagliata for Phuze Crystal. Handmade, no two are exactly alike, and because it's crafted from glass, you can leave lovely rainbows in your wake when you gesticulate.  Dop Ring $66 at Unicahome.com.

SPLURGE OF THE WEEK: CHIC WRAP DRESS  Diane von Furstenberg rode to fashion fame (and fortune) on one simple principle: the wrap dress makes anyone, regardless of size or body type, instantly chic and fabulous. This cobalt version in a crinkly summer-weight fabric comes with a detachable slip lining to keep things cool when the mercury starts to rise.  Pair with the season's gladiator sandal and some glamorous oversize sunnies to look more DVF than the wrap dress queen herself. Solid Wrap Dress, $150 at BananaRepublic.com.

If there are any high-priced pieces you'd like me to find similar, less costly versions of, please email me at carlyjcais AT fashiontribes DOT com. 'Til next week, fellow bargain-hunters!

R.I.P Yves Saint Laurent!
06.02.08 | No Comments

Ysl_dovima_irving_penn From his first collection for Christian Dior in 1958 which made him instantly famous at the age of 21 (!), and for the four decades that followed - including the opening of his eponymous house in 1962 - Yves Saint Laurent demonstrated a relevance and influence that continues to elude most fashion designers, even now.

Vintage_ysl_looks_2

While he has been credited with helping ease women such as Catherine Deneuve, Paloma Picasso, Nan Kempner, Lauren Bacall, Marella Agnelli and Marie-Hélène de Rothschild into pants for day and evening, along with safari jackets, trenchcoats, leopard prints, boho hippie garb, and even sailors' peacoats from NYC Army/Navy stores, his biggest hit was arguably Le Smoking, based on a man's tuxedo and oozing a high glam brand of hard-edged androgenous sex appeal...not to mention a disguise in the case of a pregnant (with daughter Jade) Bianca Perez Morena de Macias at her 1971 marriage to Mick Jagger).

Ysl_portraits

"His glamorous evening clothes were often adorned with appliqués and beadwork inspired by artists like Picasso, Miró and Matisse," writes The New York Times about the designer, who recently died at the age of 71 in Paris, remarking that his 1965 Mondrian collection was "among his greatest successes...Above all, he was a master colorist, able to mix green, blue, rose and yellow in one outfit to achieve an effect that was artistic and never garish."
